Lavender vs. Chamomile: Which Is Right for You?

Two of the most-suggested calming oils, compared honestly — and how to choose without buying both.

August 21, 2026 · The Mellow&Well Team

If you ask ten people for a calming oil, nine will say lavender and one will say chamomile. They are both excellent, both well-studied, and — importantly — not interchangeable.

Here is how they actually differ.

The short answer

  • Choose lavender if you want something clean, floral, versatile and easy to live with. It works in a diffuser, on a pillow, in a bath, in a linen drawer.
  • Choose chamomile if you want something warmer, rounder and heavier — and if you prefer a scent that reads as cozy rather than fresh.

If you are only buying one, buy lavender. It is the more forgiving oil, and it plays better with others.

Scent, side by side

Lavender Chamomile
Character Clean, herbaceous, softly floral Warm, sweet, hay-like
Weight Light Heavy
Sweetness Low High
Best paired with Frankincense, sweet orange Bergamot, cedarwood
Reads as Fresh linen Honey and dried flowers

Lavender is the one you can diffuse without comment. Chamomile announces itself — a few drops is genuinely enough, and too much turns syrupy.

How they behave

Lavender is the generalist. It is the oil most people already own, the one that has been studied most, and the one least likely to offend anyone in the room.

Chamomile is the specialist. It is the one people reach for when the goal is sleep specifically, and it is also — worth knowing — far more expensive to produce, which is why a genuine Roman or German chamomile costs noticeably more per millilitre.

One practical caveat: chamomile belongs to the same plant family as ragweed. If you have significant seasonal allergies, patch-test first.

What we would actually do

If you are building a small collection, do not buy both at once. Start with lavender and live with it for a month. Pay attention to when you reach for it and what you want at that moment.

Then decide:

  • Want something lighter and fresher? Stay with lavender, or try it alongside eucalyptus.
  • Want something warmer and deeper? Frankincense is a better step than chamomile for most people — resinous rather than sweet, and it layers beautifully under lavender.
  • Want the sleep-specific blend without choosing? Rest is built on lavender with frankincense underneath, which covers most of the ground chamomile would.

One last thing

Neither oil is a sedative. What they do best is mark a transition — the same smell, at the same time, every night. That repetition is doing a lot of the work, and it is free.
